Things to do if you want to feel glowingly happy for at least the next 24 hours: Watch Les Demoiselles de Rochefort.
It’s adorable. My dad has a story about going to see Jacques Demy’s other musical Les Parapluies de Cherbourg over and over (and not telling anyone) when he was 12 or 13 because he was in love with the colors in the film. (Surprise, surprise, Dad later got an art degree.) This one is the same way. Like the best musicals it seems to belong to another, happier universe where everyone dresses in coordination with their surroundings, problems can be wrapped up by singing about them, and everyone knows how to dance. Watch! It’ll make you want to sing and dance and go to art school! And for a little while it might make you feel like you belong to that happier universe too.

My dad loves Jacques Demy too. Les Demoiselles is my favorite of his films. It is so beautiful and so much fun.
